Algae - Cause and natural water treatment

Types - There are two main type of algae that are common to ponds and water features.

  1. Plankton Algae - suspended algae (Green Water)
  2. Filamentous Algae - string algae mostly found in streams with warm water areas

Causes – Sunlight, nitrogen and Phosphorus

  1. Too many fish for the pond size, Excess fish waste, decaying plants & leaves
  2. New Ponds – Ponds will need time to balance excess nutrients. Do not add plants to a new water feature unless they are properly cleaned. Wait to add fish until the water quality is established. (30 days of clear water)
  3. Alberta has 4 natural algae bloom cycles during the spring & summer months. This is caused by warm temperatures and lots of sunlight.

Water Treatment - Add nitrifying bacteria (Microbe-Lift) which will help to starve out the algae. (Your UV clarifier should be turned off for the first few days during this treatment)
Remove any debris and string algae by hand or with a net. A natural water colourant should also be added to reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the bottom of the pond.

Auto-Fill valves – An automatic water valve system that tops up your water feature.

Although most features use less water than the same size piece of grass, it is important to install an auto-fill valve to protect the pump from running dry. Every water feature is unique to its surroundings and water use can be influenced by waterfall height & aeration, wind, animal life and sun exposure.

The system also provides maintenance free operation & extra water for days of higher than normal temperatures. The auto-fill water line can be installed from an existing irrigation box or with an independent water line. Overflow protection & timed water monitoring are also available with this system.

Filters - Operation and cleaning

Bio Flow gravity filters or Pressure filters must be installed in ponds to provide water clarity and maintain water quality. These filters are both capable of using UV light as well as cellular filtration.

CPF - Pressure filter cleaning

  1. Attach a discharge hose or place a large bucket under the discharge outlet located on the top of the pressure filter. (Collect this water as it is a nutrient rich natural plant fertilizer)
  2. With your pump operating, turn the blue dial on the top of the filter to the discharge position.
  3. Pull up slowly (3-5 seconds for the full stroke). Take note of the water clarity.
  4. Repeat step 3 until water appears relatively clear.
  5. Each feature has different cleaning intervals due to environment and fish load. A cleaning schedule can be developed over time, based on the clarity of the discharged water. (Start with cleaning the filter every two weeks and revise as required.

BF - Bio Flow gravity filter cleaning

  1. Remove the top cover and remove any debris from the filter screen
  2. Turn off the pump and lift up the screen filter to allow access to the foam filter material.
  3. Push down on the foam filter pads to back flush the filter.
  4. Open the discharge plug located on the bottom of the filter
  5. Push down on the foam filter pads again to clean out any remaining debris.
  6. Close the discharge plug & place the filter screen back into position
  7. Restart you pump and ensure proper water flow before replacing the top filter cover.

Do not leave filters out of the water and do not flush the filter material with clean water during seasonal operation. This will destroy beneficial bacteria that helps keep water clean.

Both of these filters require minimal winterization to ensure the UV lights and collection basin do not crack due to expansion of freezing water.

Fish Load - How many can my pond support - Overloading your pond can cause several problems with water quality and can endanger the health of your plants and fish. To ensure overloading does not occur one of the following two calculations can be used.

  1. Using gallons of water in the pond
Goldfish produce less waste then Koi fish so a good rule of thumb for goldfish is 5" of fish for every 100 gallons of water.
Koi fish produce more waste then goldfish so a good rule of thumb for Koi fish is 3" of fish for every 100 gallons of water.
  2. Using the surface area of the pond
The guideline for this is 1 foot of fish for every 24 sq foot of surface area. Remember fish grow Koi = 30" Goldfish=12" to 14"

Filtration and circulation are also an important part of introducing fish to your pond. Your filter and other equipment may need to be upgraded to handle the increased demand on your pond ecosystem.

Frost proof pumps - A better solution - Create Escape installs new Frost-Proof technology Pumps in most of our water features. This allows the pump to remain in the pond during the winter. Together with our flexible pond tubing the pump motor is fully protected allowing a no maintenance approach to pondless water features and a low maintenance quality to our ponds. Don't sign up for expensive maintenance packages when the correct equipment and installation can eliminate the headaches and cost.

Maintenance - Why our features cost less & need less maintenance

Mosquitoes - Will I have mosquitoes if I have a pond - Mosquitoes will generally only lay their eggs in still, stagnant water. If the mosquitoes lay their eggs in your pond and the mosquito larvae hatch, the fish in your pond will consider them a treat and will pick them off the water's surface with great enthusiasm. If you don't have fish a skimmer will also get rid of floating larvae.
